Cybersecurity firm Kaspersky has cautioned FIFA World Cup fans against unofficial streaming and betting platforms to prevent loss of money and personal data.
The tournament, which began on June 11, saw an increase in scammers exploiting the heightened interest among fans. At least 336 unique domains mimicking official resources have been detected by Kaspersky.
Cybercriminals are targeting match streaming and sports betting through fake websites offering free access to World Cup broadcasts or lifetime tournament access for a cryptocurrency fee, which can lead to both registration data and funds loss.
Fans have also faced fraudulent betting and prediction platforms demanding personal information like names, email addresses, phone numbers, and more for account creation. Kaspersky warns of potential credential theft and financial losses due to password reuse across multiple services.
Users are advised to stick with official broadcasts to safeguard their data and finances. Senior web content analyst Olga Altukhova from Kaspersky emphasizes the importance of sticking to legitimate platforms.
