The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaan (PTI) on Wednesday rejected Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s claims about the legitimacy of the PTI government formed in 2018. During a National Assembly session, Sharif criticized Opposition Leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai for calling the incumbent government illegitimate.
PTI Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram stated that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s arguments were “selective memory and political acrobatics.” He alleged that if one election was legitimate, so should be another. The PTI believes this as a tacit admission of the current government’s fear towards any forensic audit or transparent scrutiny of their victory in 2018.
PTI founder Imran Khan had offered to open the results of any constituency for independent investigation if doubts were raised, but Sharif’s administration does not seem inclined towards such a move. Akram called on the government to conduct a full and transparent audit of both the 2018 and 2024 elections under judicial supervision.
Regarding Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), the party spokesperson highlighted concerns over reported irregularities in the scheme, citing an Auditor General’s report for the financial year 2024-25. More than Rs25 billion has been disbursed through BISP.
