The National Assembly has given approval to a supplementary budget totaling Rs593.64 billion for the fiscal year 2024-2025 (FY24-25), and Rs475.05 billion for the coming fiscal year (FY25-26). Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb presented these papers during a session on Wednesday.
According to the Constitution, the government must obtain parliamentary consent before any spending can proceed. This approval allows the government to allocate funds as per designated heads of expenditure. However, retrospective approval for additional expenditures is commonly sought by the government, often leaving Parliament with no alternative but to rubberstamp these allocations. Under Article 83 of the Constitution, Minister Aurangzeb laid out the Supplementary Authorised Expenditure for FY24-25 and FY25-26 alongside other documents.
Dawn has provided a breakdown of the additional amounts approved for spending during FY24-25 (July 2024 to June 2025). The supplementary grants included Rs430.1 billion for the Power Division, Rs37.89 billion for miscellaneous expenses, Rs22.84 billion for defense services, and various allocations for civil works, military operations, and different government departments.
