The government has decided to extend the Murree Expressway by a further 70 kilometers to connect Muzaffarabad, a significant step towards improving regional connectivity and safety.
During a meeting of the National Highway Authority (NHA) chaired by Communications Minister Abdul Aleem Khan, it was announced that work on this expansion will continue under Khan’s tenure. The minister highlighted previous visits he made to assess improvements along the route in November.
This extension aims to bridge the gap between Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and Pakistan’s main motorway network, offering a modern and safer travel option for residents of AJK.
Khan emphasized that this expansion marks the beginning of a new era of safe transit for AJK. He also instructed NHA leadership to prioritize completing existing projects over initiating new ones in the current fiscal year.
Specifically, Khan directed the completion of key projects such as the M-8 Motorway and the Hoshab–Awaran Road and Awaran–Nal project, crucial for regional trade with neighboring Iran and tourism development in AJK. He also outlined a vision to bolster NHA’s financial self-reliance by generating up to Rs400 billion annually through internal revenue streams.
