An aircraft the size of a car crashed into CITIC Tower, Beijing’s tallest building, on Friday as police implemented security measures around the skyscraper. Two bystanders reported the incident to Reuters.
The 108-story CITIC Tower is located in Beijing’s central business district and serves as the headquarters for the state-owned CITIC Group. A significant police presence was seen at the site with some access roads closed off, prompting the removal of unauthorized photos by authorities.
Two glass panels on a high floor were damaged due to this impact. No official statement has been issued yet. The Beijing municipal government did not respond to Reuters’ inquiry outside business hours. Two couriers provided accounts of witnessing the incident: one reported hearing a loud crash and deleting footage, while another saw unverified social media images of aircraft wreckage.
In 2022, a China Eastern passenger jet carrying 132 people crashed onto a mountainside in southern China following contact loss with air traffic control, causing significant damage and fatalities.
