The death toll from two devastating earthquakes that struck Venezuela has climbed to 920, according to National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez. In his televised address, he provided an updated count of the fatalities, which was previously reported at 589.
Military deployment has been ordered for one of the hardest-hit regions: La Guaira state, west of Caracas where at least 100 buildings were destroyed, including high-rise apartments. More than 50,000 people remain missing and 2,980 have been injured as a result of the disaster.
United Nations aid chief Tom Fletcher highlighted the enormity of the rescue effort, stating that over 50,000 people are still unaccounted for. He described it as a ‘massive job’ to navigate through the rubble and search for survivors using both their hands and specialized equipment.
