OpenAI has launched a limited preview of its latest powerful GPT-5.6 series, comprising Sol, Terra, and Luna models, to a select group of partners in the United States after requests from the U.S. government related to national security concerns.
The release comes two weeks after the U.S. government ordered Anthropic’s Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models to be banned by all foreign nationals due to potential software vulnerability risks, according to the U.S. government.
Terra is priced at half the cost of its predecessor GPT-5.5, aiming to secure customers amid competition from Anthropic and Google, as OpenAI briefed the U.S. government on its new models’ capabilities before the launch.
OpenAI said the preview will start with a limited group of trusted partners who are based in the United States but also includes overseas employees at those companies or entities. Both Anthropic’s Mythos models and OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 have raised major concerns over their unprecedented ability to identify software vulnerabilities, prompting regulatory scrutiny.
