Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will visit Iran and Turkey in July as part of Pakistan’s mediation efforts to end the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
The US military conducted airstrikes on Iranian targets earlier this week in response to an attack by Tehran. In turn, Iran responded with its own strikes against American bases in Bahrain and Kuwait, leading both sides to agree to a ceasefire.
During his visit, Prime Minister Sharif is expected to meet with the leaders of Iran and Turkey and urge restraint from all parties involved in the conflict. This follows the signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at bringing about peace in the region.
The recent airstrikes highlight the fragile interim peace deal brokered by Pakistan, which includes other countries in the Middle East as well as international participation according to Iranian officials and President Masoud Pezeshkian’s proposal for a new ‘regional security structure’.
