Pakistanis and Indians were among those killed in an explosion at Qatar’s massive Ras Laffan liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant, attributed to a ‘technical malfunction’, officials said.
Qatar’s Minister of State for Energy Saad al-Kaabi announced the loss of 13 lives belonging to Indian and Pakistani nationalities. Sixty-six others were injured, though none were in critical condition according to authorities.
The accident occurred after operations at Barzan local gas supply facility were restarted on Sunday evening, following an Iranian attack that halted them earlier in March.
A technical malfunction is blamed for the incident. Saad al-Kaabi stated that there was no evidence of sabotage or hostile intent, emphasizing it was simply ‘an accident’.
The blast took place near Doha’s northern coast and caused significant damage, with flames visible from 20 kilometers away.
