US Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized during a meeting with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) in Bahrain that any agreement reached with Iran would prioritize the interests and security of GCC member states. This follows his recent tour aimed at selling the Trump administration’s proposed accord to skeptical regional partners.
Rubio, who spoke about the potential deal with the GCC, clarified that Washington seeks a lasting peace with Iran without compromising the allies’ safety and prosperity in the oil-rich region. He highlighted that no country has the right to charge for international waterways usage, setting this as an unaccepting condition for any deal.
During his trip to the Gulf, Rubio also addressed concerns about the proposed agreement potentially weakening the alliance with Iran. He stated that they would not pursue measures that undermine allies’ security and longstanding alliances in the region.
