Australia clinched their passage to the semifinals of the Women’s T20 World Cup by securing a six-wicket victory over India at Lord’s on Sunday. Their flawless record in the group stage saw them top the standings and advance, as they chased down India’s target of 171 runs with an over to spare.
India needed a win to progress after South Africa’s match altered their chances; however, Australia struggled early when opener Georgia Voll fell to the second ball. Ellyse Perry and Ashleigh Gardner steadied the innings with a strong partnership for the fourth wicket, eventually guiding the team home.
Perry scored 56 off 38 deliveries before being dismissed by Shree Charani, while Gardner hit an unbeaten 53 from 29 balls. Both players were named as Player of the Match, emphasizing their pivotal role in Australia’s victory.
India’s captain Harmanpreet Kaur hit a scintillating 56 off just 27 deliveries, including three sixes and six fours. Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma provided an initial foundation with a combined 66 runs, but the middle-order failed to maintain the momentum.
Jemimah Rodrigues contributed 34 runs before retiring in the closing stages of the match, while Harmanpreet accelerated India’s total to their highest score against Australia in the Women’s T20 World Cup. Despite these efforts, it was not enough for India to reach the semifinals.
The loss marked a second successive edition where India failed to advance to the semi-finals, as they were eliminated from the group stage last year following New Zealand’s defeat by England on Saturday.
