Workers at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles have overwhelmingly authorized a potential strike during the FIFA World Cup, with about 2,000 food service employees voting to walk off their jobs. The Unite Here Local 11 union is demanding better pay and assurances that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents will not enter the venue.
Contract negotiations between stadium operator Legends Global and FIFA have stalled on key economic and workplace safety issues, with a 96% approval rate for strike authorization. Talks are scheduled to resume on Monday before the World Cup’s first match in Los Angeles on June 12th. Union co-president Kurt Petersen predicts that if a strike occurs, the $100,000 FIFA suites will only offer bottled water and Doritos.
Stadium workers also fear their personal information might be shared with ICE during World Cup matches, raising concerns about safety for them and their families. Cesar Zamora, a SoFi Stadium bartender, added that they are fighting for basic respect and security amid the lucrative FIFA World Cup.
