Pakistan has been elected as a permanent member of the International Olive Council (IOC), marking its debut in this esteemed organization. The Foreign Office announced this development on Monday, highlighting that Pakistan took up its seat during the IOC’s 123rd session in Lisbon, Portugal.
Representing the country was a Pakistani delegation led by Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain. During the meeting, the minister provided insight into Pakistan’s thriving olive industry and its efforts to promote sustainable practices amid climate change challenges.
The Foreign Office also mentioned that Pakistan reaffirmed its commitment to contributing positively to the global olive sector while bolstering its position in international markets. The visit included Pakistani Ambassador Aisha Farooqui, who accompanied the minister.
Pakistan emphasized significant achievements within its olive sector, such as the planting of over seven million olive trees across the country and initiatives like establishing a robust “farm-to-table” value chain with 51 operational extraction units. Modern processing facilities, nurseries, meteorological stations, and laboratories in line with IOC standards have also been set up.
The statement concluded by noting that Pakistan has achieved self-sufficiency in producing certified olive saplings and securing global recognition for its olive oil products. Established since 1959, the IOC plays a crucial role as an intergovernmental body advocating for sustainable development within the olive sector.
