President Donald Trump stated on Monday that the United States is ‘getting along well’ with Iran. This came as both countries initiated indirect talks through mediators in Doha, aiming to advance negotiations and reduce tensions after recent exchanges of fire between them.
‘The denuclearization of Iran is moving forward well,’ Trump remarked to reporters prior to his departure for a trip. ‘They have had very good meetings, and we will see how it progresses.’ He also noted that Tehran has made significant progress in talks with Washington. ‘We hit them hard last week, but they seem fine now,’ he added. The discussions were centered on the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), designed to end Middle East conflicts.
Despite initial claims suggesting direct negotiations would not occur, a diplomat confirmed that technical talks are underway between the United States and Iran. These low-level discussions focus on MoU details with support from Qatari and Pakistani mediators. However, Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi clarified that negotiations for a final deal have yet to commence.
US envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff were not present in these technical talks, according to the diplomat. On Tuesday, they met with Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani to discuss ongoing US-Iran talks within the MoU framework, as well as developments in Lebanon.
