Two years ago, a generation of Kenyans took to the streets in protest against new taxes and broader corruption. While it marked a pivotal moment for young activists demanding accountability across ethnic lines, it also came with a grim toll — over 130 lives lost during protests between June and July 2024.
Despite President William Ruto’s announcement of compensation for those affected by the violence in 2017-2025, many victims’ families remain unimpressed. They argue that the amount promised — approximately $15.5 million for up to 1,100 people — is too little and does not adequately address the injustices committed.
Amidst the ongoing compensation process, only three cases from 2024 deaths and one from 2025 have made it to court, with no officers convicted. This has left many victims’ families feeling let down by the government’s promises of justice.
